Navigating a new country, culture, and healthcare system is a daunting challenge, especially for nurses relocating to the United States. However, Alison Jones shares that MultiCare Health System isn't afraid of a challenge. Through strategic partnerships and substantial investments in training infrastructure, MultiCare established a state-of-the-art training facility in the Philippines. Here, nurses undergo rigorous training equivalent to their U.S. counterparts, ensuring a seamless transition into MultiCare's hospitals upon arrival. By addressing cultural and technological barriers head-on, Jones claims that MultiCare is committed to raising the bar for international healthcare recruitment.
In order to focus on community empowerment, Jones stresses MultiCare's "Grow Your Own" programs and their intention to exemplify their commitment to nurturing talent from within. However, it wasn’t immediately successful so Jones and her team had to take a step back to analyze the situation. She realized that they had to start at the foundation of things that would not be intuitive. For example, why do people need to wash their hands a certain way? And, during the pandemic, why do people need to wear masks? It’s not always going to be effective to teach people something. Until they know it and have been in that environment, they’re really not going to understand. Nevertheless, these initiatives provide employment and educational opportunities to individuals from underserved communities, breaking down financial barriers and creating pathways to careers in healthcare. Jones says that although it has a 97% retention rate, these programs aren’t just filling critical roles; they’re transforming lives and communities.
The future of healthcare recruitment lies with young people. Therefore, engaging with high school students is crucial for preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals. Jones highlights MultiCare's initiatives, like the Match Camp, which offers hands-on experiences and exposure to various healthcare roles, sparking interest and enthusiasm among aspiring healthcare professionals. Despite regulatory hurdles, she says that MultiCare is exploring innovative solutions to bridge the gap between education and employment. By cultivating future talent early on, MultiCare is building a deep bench of skilled healthcare professionals.
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced organizations to adapt quickly to unprecedented challenges. Jones shared how MultiCare Health System rose to the occasion by prioritizing employee well-being and patient care. Through strategic recruitment initiatives and targeted investments in employee support programs, they emerged stronger and more resilient than ever. By embracing innovation and change, MultiCare continues to lead the charge in healthcare recruitment and workforce development.
Jones runs the data metrics of the company. Therefore, they have a system level metric that everyone contributes to and a third of the hires. Her chain contributes to a third of the hires for the organization, therefore, the workforce programs are a third of the hires. In addition, she also runs all the marketing for recruitment and workforce. This just proves that in today's data-driven world, analytics are the name of the game. MultiCare understands this and has made significant investments in robust analytics infrastructure to inform recruitment strategies and workforce planning. By leveraging system-level metrics, MultiCare evaluates the effectiveness of recruitment initiatives and ensures alignment with organizational objectives. Through continuous monitoring and optimization, MultiCare aims to achieve optimal recruitment outcomes while delivering top-notch patient care.During our conversation with Alison Jones, the mastermind behind MultiCare's recruitment and workforce development, she revealed some game-changing metrics.
